Severe Flooding and Evacuations in Far North Queensland as Heavy Rainfall Causes Chaos
Far North Queensland is facing a serious weather crisis as heavy rainfall causes widespread flooding across the region, forcing the evacuation of residents and the closure of several key roads.
The deluge, which has drenched the area with over 300mm of rain, sparked major flooding in Gordonvale, a town located about 27 kilometers south of Cairns. The State Emergency Service (SES) and Swiftwater rescue teams have been working tirelessly to evacuate residents, ensuring their safety as floodwaters continue to rise.
In addition to the evacuations, the Bruce Highway has been closed at Fishery Falls and Seymour River due to flooding, severely disrupting traffic flow and causing major delays for those attempting to travel through the region. These closures are just one part of the widespread disruption, as authorities warn that conditions could worsen.
Residents are being urged to remain vigilant, with more heavy rainfall expected throughout the coming days. The situation is being closely monitored by emergency services, as a tropical low developing off the coast of Cairns has the potential to intensify into a tropical cyclone, further complicating the already dangerous conditions.
For now, emergency services continue to work around the clock to support those affected, and residents are advised to stay updated with official warnings and avoid non-essential travel.
As the region braces for more extreme weather, it’s crucial for everyone in Far North Queensland to prioritize safety and heed the guidance of authorities.
